The 1966 GT350 Hertz Shelby Mustang story.

This story is about a rare Hertz Shelby 1966 My uncle bought in the early -70 from the US
(imported to Sweden).

My uncles Ford Mustang Fastback GT350 Hertz-Shelby 1966.
From my private photo album, pic shoot with a instamatic camera mid 70:ies.

The car was wrecked but fixable. He restored it in the 70:ies way.
He had no clue about the rarity and he really didnt care then, and nobody else either.
The Shelby got custom paint and a big motor. He massaged a 351 Cleveland in it and had it for a couple of years. He got tired of it and wanted a Mopar instead.
Then he sold the Shelby to someone who pretty soon swapped it for another car at a car dealer.

Tommy( the one in the magazine pic) bought the Hertz Shelby (late 70) and started to make a restoration. Pretty soon he noticed that the original paint was unusual.
He started to investigate why the car had been painted white with golden Shelby stripes.
When he discovered through the VIN that the car was a really rare car he also realized that it would be both hard and expensive to get the restoration correct.

The project got to a stand still for several years. At some time the owner contacted my Uncle about this car looking for original parts. The original Shelby rims was one of the things missing.
My uncle recalled he sold them to a guy with a Mercedes, which needed them for his winter tires.
The Mercedes owner was tracked down and he still had the rims, the rims got bought back.
Because of that the rims where in a pretty rough shape the Hertz Shelby owner put them outside his garage waiting for restoration. One day the rims was gone, Stolen.

My Uncle later on moved to another city and  was at work(as a telecommunications technician). One day he visited a home for some repairs. He looked around in the office he was working in and noticed some pics of vintage muscle cars. Specialy one pic looked familiar to him. "Yes" it was his old Shelby Mustang in the pic.
He asked the owner of the house about the pic and he confirmed that the car was sitting in his garage still not restored.

Now over 40 years later the 1966 Ford Mustang 289 cui  GT350 Fastback Hertz Shelby rental car is restored in its former glory.
It was only 6 Hertz Shelbys with this White with gold stripes, engine, transmission made.
The car also had a Paxton charger.

Here is a pic from the magazine and the Hertz Shelby Mustang, and yes this is the same car in theese pics and this is a true story.

From the magazine Bilsport Classic 2015.
